Calamus Mom Hack #2: Scripture Memorization Made Easy

First off, why the push for Scripture memorization. Isn’t it just one more thing to do when we are already overwhelmed and busy?

Here are five reasons I find it important enough to make it a priority for myself and my children.Mom Hack Scripture Memorization Made Easy

  1. Scripture memory is commanded. (Deut. 11:18-21)
  2. It helps to keep us from sinning. (Psalm 119:11)
  3. It is helpful for growing in our walk with God. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
  4. It is helpful for training and disciplining our children. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
  5. It equips for doing the good work we are called to. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.” ~Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (NIV)

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against God.” ~Psalm 119:11 (NIV)

“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”   ~2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

I can hear some of you saying, “Amy, those are some compelling reasons, but where do I find the time to do it myself let alone teach my kids? And how do I get the verses to stick for any of us?”

Thanks for asking.

That’s where Calamus Mom Hack #2: Scripture Memorization Made Easy comes in.

Use music.

Do you ever get a song stuck on repeat in your head?

That is the power of music as a tool for memorization at work.

In our home, we do this in a couple of different ways.

Right now, we are using Clay Clarkson’s Our 24 Family Ways: A Family Devotional Guide as our family devotional. (I cannot recommend this book enough. More on that another time.) Each week has a “Way” pertaining to the way we live our lives and a verse to accompany it. We are memorizing the verses as a family. To do this, I come up with a little tune or use a tune of a nursery rhyme and we sing it together every morning at breakfast and in the evening when we do family devotions after supper. Within two or three days, the kiddos and I usually have the new verse memorized. This has been incredibly helpful when I am teaching, training, and correcting our children as well as adjusting my own attitude and actions.

The other way we use music for memorization is even easier as no one has to come up with the tune or remember said tune the next day. We keep CDs with memory verses in our suburban and listen to it when we are out and about.

Currently in our CD player is the Matthew Verses CD from DeVonne Lee at Hide and Keep. Though many of her resources correlate with a Bible quizzing program through the Church of the Nazarene, the verse CDs are absolutely wonderful for anyone. She also has DVDs with actions for some of the CDs if you want more.

Here are a couple of other resources for CDs of scripture.

I’d love to hear from you. Do you have any tips or tricks to help you or your children memorize scripture? What benefits of hiding God’s word in your heart have you seen in your own life?
