God Sees You in the Hard Moments of Motherhood

It’s the middle of the night, and you awaken to the sound of your baby as he fusses yet again. Quietly you sit and rock him as you give him the milk and cuddles he craves. Even as he relaxes against you, you know morning will soon dawn, and your body won’t be rested.

Nights like these are the hard moments of motherhood making you wonder how you will survive the next day.

But even here, in the middle of the night, God sees you—He will sustain you.

Cast your cares on the Lord
    and he will sustain you;
he will never let
    the righteous be shaken.

~Psalm 55:22

 It’s suppertime, a time of family bonding around the table—at least that’s what you envisioned when you made meals around the table a priority. But now the toddler is having a meltdown because you cut his meat when he was sure he could do it all by himself.

Meals like these are the hard moments of motherhood making you wonder if the effort you put into traditions is even worth it.

But even here, in the middle of the toddler tantrum, God sees you—He says to not grow weary of the good you are doing for in time, you will reap the harvest of good.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. ~Galatians 6:9

It’s bedtime, and as you tuck her in, your little girl starts to cry, saying, “Mommy, that girl, she called me mean names again.” You comfort her and tell her how sorry you are. You do your best to help her understand that not everyone has a mommy and daddy to teach them how to love others. You pray with her both for her and for the little girl causing the pain. But even as you comfort, even as you pray, you question if you are handling it right and wonder what else you can do.

Situations like these are the hard moments of motherhood making you wonder if you are wise enough to help your children navigate the stormy waters of this world.

But even here, in the murky waters of childhood drama, God sees you—He promises to give you wisdom if you will only ask.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. ~James 1:5

Though you dream of peacefully sleeping babies, compliant toddlers, and drama free childhoods, God never promised motherhood would be easy. As long as you walk this path of raising your children, there are bound to be hard moments of motherhood—moments that make you question if you are fit for the task set before you.

But even here, in the hard moments of motherhood, God sees you and proclaims you are his “handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good work, which [he] prepared in advance…” (Ephesians 2:10)

So here, in whatever hard moment of motherhood you find yourself in right now, take heart—the very God who made the universe sees you and will carry you through.
